Why lists disagree
Most “best mahjong games” pages blend three markets: apps with anime characters and a rank, websites that say mahjong and mean solitaire, and a smaller set of tables that deal a Chinese or Hong Kong wall. A single numbered list hides that. A game can be excellent at Riichi and useless for a Cantonese family, or excellent at solitaire and irrelevant to scoring faan.
Table Mahjong is explicit about its lane. It is free browser play for Hong Kong / Cantonese Mahjong. There are no interrupting ads. An account is optional: sign in if you want table companions and a streak, including Bao the panda, and skip it if you just want a hand. Companions do not change the score. We do not claim a public crowd. Quick Match is paused, and we are not publishing a return date.
How to judge a page that says “play mahjong”
- Rule name. Hong Kong, Cantonese, Riichi, Taiwanese, American, or “solitaire.” If the page never says, assume you should look harder.
- Seats. Four players around a wall is the table game. One grid of tiles is the puzzle.
- Invite. Friends need a private link more often than they need a global lobby.
- Friction. Count the account screens and the install before the first discard.
- Interruptions. A free puzzle can still stop you with ads. Table Mahjong does not run interrupting ads, and AdSense is not enabled.
